Loreto College began as an extension of the school department of Loreto House, which dates back to 1841. School leavers were prepared privately for the examinations of the University of Calcutta. As the number of students increased affiliation to the University was sought and granted in 1912 - 1913, first for the Intermediate Arts, later for the B.A. the I.Sc., and B.Ed. Additions to the number of courses offered and increase in enrolment led to the re-building of the College 1959-1961.
The Bachelor of Education Department offers a one-year. post-graduate B.Ed course, affiliated to Calcutta University. The B.Ed. Degree qualifies teachers for secondary and higher secondary school work. The B.Ed. Department was recognized by the NCTE (National Council of Teacher Education) in 1998. In 2003, NAAC (National Assessment & Accreditation Council) awarded the Department a grade of B+.
The B.Ed, Library stocks books on pedagogy, education, psychology, school administration and method subjects, as well a large variety of journals relating to education and teaching. Students also have access to the Geography practical room as well as a common room. TV, VCR, audio & internet facilities are also available.

Fluency and accuracy in English as Teaching Practice is done in English medium schools.
Punctuality, regularity in attendance and a sense of responsibility are essential.
Anyone who does not intend to complete the course should not join as this deprives another applicant of the opportunity to train.
University regulations require collegiate students to attend 75% of the lectures delivered in each course and to pass the college selection examination as necessary conditions for being presented for University Examination.
A period of community service is compulsory.
